About John Dalton

I am an artist, writer, and podcaster. I have interviewed hundreds of the top figurative artists working today. Each episode feels like listening in on a really interesting conversation you might overhear in a coffee shop or a pub as we discuss the nitty gritty of creating art.

With this art prize, I want to celebrate the community of artists who listen to my podcast, showcase their talent and support them with recognition, cash, and materials.

Rather than the traditional 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, I want to expand the effectiveness of the prize and instead have 14 first prize winners and 14 honourable mentions. This means each of the winners can add “1st place in the John Dalton - gently does it . . . Art Prize” to their CV.

I am organizing this prize in collaboration with Kaleido, a brilliant new and innovative platform for artists. All winners and honourable mentions will be included in the John Dalton - gently does it . . Art Prize special collection on Kaleido.

    Is there a fee?

    No! It’s completely free to enter.

    Do I keep my artwork?

    You keep all your work and retain all rights to it. You can even upload sold artwork to your portfolio.

    What’s the minimum age to apply?

    18

    Does the artwork have to be new?

    No, the artwork can be from any time in your whole body of work.

    Does the artwork have to be available for sale?

    No, the artwork can be already sold.

    What criteria will I use to determine the winners?

    I will look at all the artwork in your portfolio. If you are a regular listener to the podcast you will know the sort of artwork that I resonate with. I am looking for technical excellence as a given. I am particularly looking for artists who are advancing figurative art and showing new directions it could go.

    Can I keep using Kaleido?

    Yes! Kaleido is a free interactive media platform for artists, and you can take advantage of it even after the prize ends. Kaleido’s features help you tell your story, sell your art, and connect to artists and collectors.

    Is the prize open to other forms of art (music, poetry, tattoo)?

    Our prize is only for visual arts, but we do accept digital art.
